LAST NIGHT THE Disney Channel featured a family with same-sex parents for the very first time on one of their sitcoms.
The storyline appears in one of the final episodes of Good Luck Charlie, in which toddler Charlie’s parents discover her new friend has two mothers.
The episode was aired despite opposition from fundamentalist Christian group One Million Moms, who urged their supporters to request that Disney remove the scene.
In a post on their website, the group said:
Just because something may be legal or because some are choosing a lifestyle doesn’t make it morally correct. Disney should stick to entertaining instead of pushing an agenda. Conservative families need to urge Disney to exclude confusing topics that children are far too young to comprehend.
When plans for the episode were first announced last July, a spokesperson for Disney told TV Guide that the storyline was developed to be “relevant to kids and families around the world, and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”
